Stata Installation Instructions for Macquarie University Students

As a Macquarie University student you have free access to download and install Stata on personal computers. Here we go through the steps to download and install Stata on both Windows and Mac computers.


Windows:

  1. Go to https://students.mq.edu.au/support/technology/software/stata and click on the “Windows (64-bit only)” drop-down menu

  2. Click on the red Stata link in step 1 to download the “SetupStata17.exe” install file

  3. Click on the red licence file link in step 1 to download the “stata-licence.zip” archive file

  4. Open the “SetupStata17.exe” file, located in your downloads folder

  5. Follow the prompts, and make sure to select “Stata/MP” when prompted to select your “edition”. Do not change the default installation location.

  6. Once Stata is installed, go back to your downloads folder and open the “stata-licence.zip” archive. You can do this by double-clicking on the folder. Within will be another folder called “stata-licence”, double-click on this folder to open it. Within this folder you should find a file called “stata.lic”. Right-click and select “copy”.

  7. Go to your “Program Files” folder, located on your C drive (C:\Program Files).

  8. Within your “Program Files” folder you should find a “Stata17” folder. Double-click to go into this “Stata17” folder. Within the “Stata17” folder, right-click and select “paste” to paste the “stata.lic” file into your “Stata17” folder. NOTE: If you have previously installed Stata it may ask if you want to replace the file. Select "Replace" when prompted.

  9. Once you have done this the folder should look like this:


You can now open and run Stata! Search “Stata” in the taskbar, or simply double-click the “StataMP-64” application file as you can see above. You should then be greeted by this Stata screen:


Mac

  1. Go to https://students.mq.edu.au/support/technology/software/stata and click on the “Mac” drop-down menu

  2. Click on the red Stata link in step 1 to download the “Stata17.dmg” install file

  3. Click on the red licence file link in step 1 to download the “stata-licence.zip” archive file

  4. Open the “Stata17.dmg” install file, located in your downloads folder, and double-click the "Install Stata" module

  5. Follow the prompts, and make sure to select “Stata/MP” when prompted to select your “edition”. Do not change the default installation location.

  6. Once Stata is installed, go back to your downloads folder and open the “stata-licence.zip” archive. You can do this by double-clicking on the folder. Within there may be another folder called “stata-licence”, if this is the case double-click on this folder to open it. Within this folder you should find a file called “stata.lic”. Right-click and select “copy”.

  7. Go to your “Applications” folder

  8. Within your “Applications” folder, there should be a folder called either "Stata" or "Stata17". When you find the folder, double-click to go into it. Within the folder, right-click and select “paste” to paste the “stata.lic” file into the folder. NOTE: If you have previously installed Stata it may ask if you want to replace the file. Select "Replace" when prompted.

  9. Once you have done this the folder should look like this:


You can now open and run Stata! Search “Stata” in the spotlight search, or simply double-click the “StataMP” application file as you can see above. You should then be greeted by the Stata Mac screen, which will look similar to the Stata Windows screen shown above.
